one space at a time

One of my latest obsessions is making this apartment-- which I have been treating like a temporary abode for some time now -- truly feel like a home . . our home. I decided to start with the first thing I see in the morning -- my bedside table. I cleared the trunk I have there of the piles that had accumulated and went about placing things there that I find beautiful, inspiring and/or important. Each thing has a reason to be there and, believe it or not, I spent quite some time moving things around in subtle ways to decide just exactly how I wanted each thing to relate to the others. This is what I came up with for now . . .

This photograph I took when Jack was about six months old I believe. It makes me smile whenever I look at it -- not just the exact moment that was captured in this particular photograph, but that whole afternoon I spent with my beautiful little man and my clunky, old camera.

I was not alone in creating my little bedside space -- Jack helped out as well. My first step was to clean out the vintage boxes I have had forever to make room for the more organized sewing items I wanted to store there and to find all of the stray buttons I had floating around so they could live in a jar beside my bed. Now, Jack loves to empty a box . . . any old box will do. But in one of these boxes he found twelve little spools of thread which he played with, I kid you not, for over an hour. It was really an unexpectedly lovely morning . . . the two of us sitting on his bedroom floor, making a home.
