blocks

I found these blocks for Jack at a consignment sale about 6 months ago. At first he paid them little to no attention. Fairly recently he started playing with them some but it was more about pulling them all out in order to put them back in the wagon we store them in. Then once or twice he pulled them out and lined them up -- the way he always does with his cars.

Then suddenly one day he began to build. It is kind of profound when he goes and does that -- just wakes up one day and does something he never did before. It might seem so simple to an onlooker but it is something he NEVER did before. Then one day he does it -- without coaxing or leading. Now I will find him over there building little wonders like this one about once a day and then he will leave it there and run off to play with something else. Now maybe only a mother wonders at such things but seriously when it comes to building with blocks, Jack had me beat in creativity and unlikely combinations from his very first day of building . . . beginner's luck perhaps.

What I love about his creations is that they often seem like they should not be able to remain standing, but they do. I sit and I marvel at things I would not have tried or thought possible. And I marvel at his complete concentration on what he is doing -- the way he looks over his little glasses at his creation unfolding, unaware of me or much else going on in the room. And then when he is done, he is simply done and does not seem to give it another thought.

So many lessons to learn from my little architect.
